Frequently Asked Questions

What does MigraineScan actually do?

MigraineScan is an educational label-literacy tool. You scan a food barcode and the app checks the ingredient list against a database of common migraine trigger categories — such as tyramine, MSG, nitrates, histamine, artificial sweeteners, caffeine, and alcohol.

It is not a medical device and does not diagnose, treat, or prevent migraines. Always consult a healthcare professional for medical advice.

A product scanned but showed "No triggers found" — is it safe?

"No triggers found" means none of the trigger categories in our database were detected in that product's ingredient list. It does not mean the product is guaranteed migraine-safe for you. Food triggers are highly individual — an ingredient not in our database may still be a personal trigger. Use this app as one tool among many, and always read labels yourself.

A barcode scan returned "Product not found" — what do I do?

MigraineScan uses OpenFoodFacts, an open-source community database. Not all products are in their database, especially regional, store-brand, or newly released items.

If you'd like to help add products, visit openfoodfacts.org to contribute product data.

What do the Severity and Detection labels mean?

Severity (Mild / Moderate / Significant) — how strongly a trigger category is generally linked to migraines based on its known risk level. This reflects the category itself, not the quantity found in the product.

Detection (Confirmed / Likely present / Inferred) — how clearly the ingredient was found in the product's ingredient list:

  • Confirmed — the ingredient was found by name explicitly.
  • Likely present — an indirect or ambiguous match was found.
  • Inferred — detected indirectly; check the physical label yourself.
How does the SAFE / REVIEW / AVOID verdict work?

The verdict is calculated from the combined score of all detected triggers weighted by their severity, detection confidence, and your personal sensitivity settings.

  • SAFE — No triggers from our database were detected.
  • REVIEW — One or more ingredients that may be triggers for some people were detected.
  • AVOID — Multiple or stronger trigger signals were detected based on your profile.

The verdict shifts based on your sensitivity settings. Setting a trigger to "High" sensitivity makes it weigh more heavily in the score. Setting it to "None" removes it from consideration.

How do I manage or cancel my premium subscription?

MigraineScan Premium is billed through your Apple ID via the App Store. To manage or cancel your subscription:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad
  2. Tap your name at the top → Subscriptions
  3. Find MigraineScan and tap it
  4. Tap Cancel Subscription to cancel

Cancelling stops future renewals. You keep premium access until the end of the current billing period. We do not issue refunds for unused subscription time — contact Apple Support for refund requests.

I upgraded to Premium but the app still shows "Free plan" — how do I fix it?

First, try restoring your purchases from within the app:

  1. Open the Account tab
  2. Tap Restore Purchases

If that doesn't work, close the app completely, reopen it, and try again. If you're still having issues, email us at safescansystems@gmail.com with your Apple ID email and we'll help sort it out.

How do I delete my account and data?

You can delete your account directly from the app:

  1. Open the Account tab
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account
  3. Confirm the deletion in the prompt

This permanently deletes your account, scan history, and profile data. This action cannot be undone. If you need help with account deletion, email safescansystems@gmail.com.

Does MigraineScan work offline?

An internet connection is required to look up product data from OpenFoodFacts and to sync your scan history. The camera scanner itself works offline, but the ingredient analysis requires a network connection to fetch the product's ingredient list.

Is my health data shared with anyone?

No. Your trigger profile, sensitivity settings, and scan history are private to your account. We do not sell or share your data with advertisers, data brokers, or any third party for marketing purposes. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
